4 Ways to Make Yoga Travel-Friendly

It’s vacation time! And, while summer means lots of fun, beaches, and sun, it also means long car trips, waiting around in airports, packing and unpacking. All of that stress just makes it even more important to keep up with your yoga practice. But, it can be challenging to find space or time. Here are four ways to make your practice travel with you this summer:


1. Speed it Up

You might not be able to find time for a 60 or 90 minute practice, but, you can probably squeeze in 15 or 20 minutes to at least cover the basics and get your blood flowing.  Just make sure that you still warm up and end with a brief rest.  You can also go online and find a wide variety of short practices.


2. Make a Date

Ok, so you can’t make a class, but, you don’t have to bail on your mat.  If it helps, write into your smartphone calendar or on paper a little reminder.   You don’t have to set a time—just say “Yoga Wednesday.”  Making that kind of commitment is a big help in getting yourself motivated to actually do your practice.  It’s also a great way to include family or friends if they’re into yoga.



3. Strike a Pose 

Don’t have even five minutes?  Try de-stressing with just a favorite pose or two if all else fails ( think airport security lines with their endless waits).  There are more than a few standby poses that work.  Try simply grounding yourself in Mountain Pose (Tadasana). Stand with your toes touching and your heels slightly apart.  Let your arms relax by your sides, palms forward.  Engage your core by drawing your navel to your spine.  Soften your gaze and jawline. Take a deep breath. Hold for 30 seconds to one minute.  You might be surprised at how deeply centering this can feel.



 

4. Pack for It

If you have your gear, you’re more likely to be motivated to practice.  Stash leggings and a top in your bag.  Keep a strap handy. And, of course, don’t forget your Paws! ;)
