Whether you’re practicing yoga inside the home, outdoors, or at your local spa or fitness center, you can reap the benefits of yoga in any location. More importantly, you may not know that the city you live in could have a major impact on your ability to enjoy yoga’s countless perks. In fact, certain places are known for yoga, and yogis will travel or relocate to these cities to carry out their passion. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best cities for yoga below so that you can contemplate where to go for your next retreat or even decide on the next city to call home.
Missoula, MT
One study ranks Missoula the best U.S. city for yoga because of its 9.4 yoga establishments per capita and overall culture. This city has a seemingly endless supply of mountainous scenery, running trails, and outdoor activities like camping, rafting, kayaking and hiking. The culture itself also makes it a great place to move or travel to, based on its local breweries, festivals and events, and museums. With ample outdoor space, there is plenty of opportunity for relaxation and meditation in the great outdoors of mountainous Montana.
Portland, ME
Known for its fitness for yoga and plentiful studios throughout the city, Portland is also ranked one of the best places to live in the U.S. However, for those planning to plant roots here, prepare for a higher cost of living and rising prices of homes for sale in specific neighborhoods. This city could be a great place to live for yogis practicing a natural lifestyle, as farm to table has become increasingly popular here. Retirability, a healthy job market, and a coastal culture all make it worth considering a visit as well.
Greensboro, NC
In another study conducted by Lawn Love, experts ranked the largest U.S. cities based on their compatibility with outdoor yoga, deeming Greensboro #1. This location has the highest quality instructors and environment, while also offering the most affordable classes amongst all major cities. It is also known for its variety of classes, ranging from beginner’s yoga to goat yoga to trap yoga. Add to that its strength in diversity, and this city could be a fit for yogis of all backgrounds and interests.
Scottsdale, AZ
This location is listed amongst both studies, favored for both indoor and outdoor yoga. It topped the list of most parkland acres per 1,000 residents, making for tons of hotspots for outdoor yoga classes. In addition, it ranked eleventh in the best overall cities for yoga in the U.S., with 6.7 establishments per capita. It may also be helpful to know that the city is named the best place to retire, and one of the healthiest cities in America, which would fit many yoga enthusiasts’ lifestyles.
